Pyroptosis is essentially cell inflammatory necrosis mediated by GSDMD (gasdermin D) protein, which is closely related to a variety of pathophysiological processes.

The osmotic balance on both sides of the cell membrane is broken, resulting in the release of IL-1β, IL-18 and other inflammatory factors and pro-inflammatory mediators. Eventually, the cells burst and dissolve. The cytoplasmic content is released to the exterior environment, and more inflammatory cells are recruited due to pro-inflammatory signals to neighboring cells, which triggers an obvious inflammatory response. There will be slight DNA damage and chromosome condensation, but the nucleus remains intact.
