More Details
Alanine is a non-essential amino acid used in the glucose-alanine cycle between tissues and the liver. In the tissues that metabolize the amino acid, the amino group is collected as glutamate by transamination. The amino group is then transferred from glutamate to pyruvate by alanine aminotransferase (ALT) to form alanine and alpha-ketoglutarate. The resulting alanine is transported to the liver, where the reverse ALT reaction occurs and pyruvate is regenerated. Pyruvate is converted to glucose by gluconeogenesis and then recycled to the tissues. Alanine concentrations may correlate with hypertension, energy intake, cholesterol levels, and body mass index.
