Cholesterol concentrations in high-density lipoproteins (HDL) and low-density (LDL)/very low-density (VLDL) lipoproteins are strong predictors of coronary heart disease. Functional HDL provides protection by removing cholesterol from cells and atherosclerosis. Due to the higher risk of atherosclerosis, higher concentrations of LDL and lower concentrations of functional HDL are strongly associated with cardiovascular disease. The balance between HDL and LDL is entirely genetically determined, but can be altered by medications, food choices and other factors.
