Glucose 6-phosphate (G6P) is a key sugar intermediate for the entry of glucose into cells and then into metabolic pathways or storage.G6P can enter the glycolytic pathway to shunt pentose phosphate or be stored as glycogen or starch.G6P is converted by G6PDH to produce the reducing equivalent in the form of NADPH. This is particularly important in erythrocytes where G6PDH deficiency leads to hemolytic anemia.
